Best things to do on holiday in Staffordshire

Staffordshire Days out

Best for an iconic venue: The National Memorial Arboretum

The National Memorial Arboretum is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance and home to iconic Armed Forces Memorial. The expansive site is centrally located on the edge of Staffordshire and is accessible from major road networks.

The Arboretum features over 330 thought-provoking memorials, nestled amongst lush maturing woodland. Military and civilian associations are represented alongside tributes for individuals. Rich in design and symbolism and sympathetic to the landscape they inhabit the memorials and their stories are waiting to be discovered.

Best for garden enthusiasts: Trentham Gardens

Be inspired by the show gardens including award-winning gardens from RHS Chelsea and RHS Tatton Flower Show. The awe-inspiring gardens include the splendour of the Italian Garden, with its contemporary design by Tom Stuart-Smith, grand Italianate parterres, fountains, trellis walkway and David Austin Rose border. Meander the Floral Labyrinth and Rivers of Grass by pre-eminent Dutch designer Piet Oudolf – a distinctive fresh, floral prairie and vast naturalistic meadow.
You can take a woodland walk round around the Capability Brown designed mile-long lake or get active in the adventure playground or get lost in the hide-and-speak maze. In spring and summer you can steam along the lakeside astride the miniature train, set sail on the electric catamaran or get naked from the knees down and tantalise your toes on the UK’s first Barefoot walk.

Best for families: Stafford Castle

Stafford Castle is considered one of the best surviving examples of Norman earthworks in the country and is an impressive example of the motte and bailey system. The site itself extends to over 26 acres and consists of Keep, inner bailey, outer bailey, woodland, herb garden, visitor centre and car park. A programme of archaeological excavations has gradually revealed many of its secrets. Visitors can follow an informative trail of interpretation panels to discover the castle’s history.
