Best things to do on holiday in Cumbria

Although Cumbria is probably best known for the Lake District, it is also home to beautiful beaches, historic monuments and gorgeous sunset views. All this makes a holiday in Cumbria an endless adventure.

Cumbria Beaches

Best for best for wildlife: St Bees beach

Stretching from South Head to Seamill lane, St Bees beach consists of a shingle bank which slopes down to an expanse of golden sand. The sand here is exposed at most states of tide except for a couple of hours either side of high tide.
At the northern end of the beach is a promenade that extends a towards the red sandstone cliffs in the central section of the beach. Beyond these the beach is backed by St Bees Golf Club
There is a RSPB nature reserve on Saint Bees Head which is home to a range of seabirds including guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and razorbills. You can also spot peregrines and ravens above the red sandstone cliffs.

Best for stunning sunsets: Silecroft

On the south-western tip of the glorious Lake District National Park, Silecroft is a large shingle beach overlooked by the imposing Black Combe Fell, looming 600 metres high. To add to the picturesque setting, you can also see the Isle of Man in the distance on clear days โ€“ itโ€™s worth sticking around for the breath-taking sunsets too. The gently shelving shore is as popular with sea fishermen as it is with families and dog walkers, and you can also spot toads in the springtime in the Site of Special Scientific Interest alongside the beach.

Best for dogs: Haverigg beach

Haverigg beach is found at the mouth of the Duddon Estuary and has views over the Lake District fells.
The shingle beach gives way to a vast expanse of sand, heading out towards the Irish sea. There are large sand dunes, covered in sharp sea-grasses. The long beach is clean and has, in the past, been awarded Blue Flag status.
There are plenty of free parking spaces and a good childrenโ€™s play area as well as a reasonably-priced cafรฉ. The beach is a good place to fly a kite and is popular with dog walkers. There are generally no restrictions on dogs, although they must be kept on a lead around the RSBP Hodbarrow nature reserve.

Cumbria Days out

Best for historic adventure: Hadrianโ€™s Wall

Hadrianโ€™s Wall is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It stretches seventy-three miles from Wallsend near Newcastle, across the neck of England to Bowness-on-Solway in North West Cumbria, and stands today as a reminder of the past glories of one of the worldโ€™s greatest empires.

Best for railway enthusiasts: Lacyโ€™s Caves and Long Meg Circular Walk

Lacyโ€™s Caves and Long Meg Circular Walk is a 8.5 kilometre loop trail located near Penrith, Cumbria, England that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.

Best for families: Hutton-in-the-Forest

Hutton-in-the-Forest is a spectacular place to visit, located on the northern edge of the Lake District in Cumbria. As well as an unusual variety of architecture and art, the gardens and woodland are spectacular.
