Best things to do on holiday in Hardy Country in Dorset

On our second visit to Dorset we are exploring the rural idyll of Thomas Hardy’s Dorset. Concentrating our searches on the classic English landscapes of Hardy’s “Wessex” which appeared throughout his novels and gave him inspiration, such as Higher Bockhampton, where he was born, and Shaftesbury, the remarkable hill top town that he referred to as “Shaston” in his novels and along the spectacular shoreline near the harbour town of Weymouth.

Dorset Hardy Country Days out

Best for literary lovers: Dorchester

In Dorchester, Hardy’s Casterbridge, visit his statue and the Dorset County Museum where you can view his recreated study and personal possessions. Max Gate, Hardy’s home of his own design, is located on the edge of town and his cottage birthplace is hidden in woodland nearby at Higher Bockhampton.

Best for walkers: Explore the Jurassic Coast

A wonderfully varied landscape, there are opportunities here for many different and unforgettable experiences, from lazy-summer beach days and family BBQs to soul-stirring walks in wind-swept winter.

Best for a unique experience: Bush Farm Bison Centre

Your chances of seeing a wild bison in the UK are pretty slim, so why not spend a whole day with them at Bush Farm Bison Centre. With oak woodland complete with picnic sites and play areas, learn about the history of the bison and view a great display of Native American artefacts.

Dorset Hardy Country Beaches

Best for stunning scenery: West Bay

West Bay has two beaches, East Beach and West Beach. The East Beach is a sloping, shingle beach backed by magnificent sandstone cliffs. The scenery is truly spectacular here, the golden cliffs rise 50m vertically above the beach and the views towards Chesil Beach and Portland will take your breath away.
West Beach is a smaller, quieter beach popular with young families, the protective cove formed between the harbour’s Jurassic Pier and the Esplanade’s rock armour groynes making it safe and shallow for paddling.

Best for Families: Weymouth

Blue Flag winning Weymouth Beach is consistently recognised as one of the top ten beach destinations in Europe and it’s easy to see why. With beautiful golden sands sprinkled with deckchairs, safe shallow waters, an action packed events programme and pretty harbourside, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

Best for swimming: Swanage Beach

The gently sloping, golden sand and clear water are just some of the great reasons that Swanage Beach has been awarded a Blue Flag and Seaside Award. RNLI lifeguards are situated within the bathing zone which is the ideal location for your family swim.

The birthplace of Thomas Hardy

A trip to Hardy country without seeing where it all began? We don’t think so. The house is a small cob and thatch cottage built by his father. The garden reflects most people’s idea of a typical cottage garden, with roses around the door, and the sound of birdsong, even in winter.

Sunday Lunch at The Greyhound Inn

Located in Dorchester and surrounded by Hardy-rich countryside and history, friendly locals and welcoming staff awaiting your visit at The Greyhound Inn. Sunday roasts are a real treat and you’ll have an extensive wine list to go alongside.

The Acorn Inn, referred to as ‘The Sow and Acorn’ in ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’, is your perfect resting place for your Thomas Hardy experience. Sit by a roaring fire in winter and enjoy a pint of real ale in the beer garden during the warmer months.
