Explore the depths of Scotland
With all the tourists tied to going away during school holidays back at home, Scotland is one of our top choices for an autumn holiday. The lochs are calm and midge free in September and if mountain walking is your thing, you could consider hiking a Munro or two. Spend your evenings under the stars
Autumn is an ideal season for astronomy. September and October are still warm enough to sit under the stars long into the night, and with a motorhome, you can drive deep into the wilds of Dartmoor or Exmoor to avoid light pollution spoiling your view of the Milky Way’s 200 billion stars.
If you like stargazing of a different kind, the autumn is a popular season with production companies shooting films and TV series for broadcast in the coming spring and summer. It’s no secret that many hit shows (hint: Poldark) are shot in Cornwall, which gives you yet another reason to enjoy an autumn holiday road-trip through those winding lanes to revisit where Aidan and the cast spent those long months filming. Be mesmerised by murmurations
Starling murmurations are a truly incredible sight, and autumn is the time to make the journey to witness them. What’s great is that you don’t need any special equipment. Early evening, just before dusk, is the best time across the UK, but early mornings also work and there are often fewer crowds. The most popular murmuration sites include Shapwick Heath, Somerset; Aberystwyth Pier, Ceredigion; Brighton Pier, Sussex; Leighton Moss, Lancashire; Fen Drayton, Cambridgeshire and Minsmere, Suffolk.
Festivals aren’t all about the music
Whilst the summer music festivals have passed, there is still plenty of festival fun to experience through the autumn. October welcomes the annual, world-renowned Cheltenham Literature Festival or, if you’d prefer to stay local to Motorhome Holiday Company, there’s the Bristol Festival of Literature a couple of weeks later. Then, of course, there’s another opportunity to rub shoulders with Hollywood’s great and good at the BFI London Film Festival. Rio might have the biggest carnival in the world and the Notting Hill Carnival might offer a multi-cultural summer party, but if you want something closer to home to warm your hearts in the autumn months, the West Country is renowned for its own take on carnivals. Many towns and villages across the south west have carnival clubs that spend an entire year planning and building floats ready for the season, which consists of at least fifteen carnivals in Somerset alone. Our top tips for the biggest are Bridgewater and North Petherton. You’ll need to arrive early to nab your favoured viewpoint (and, no, we’re not divulging ours), but with one of our motorhomes, you can eat, drink and be merry in the warm while the crowds enviously stamp their feet and hug paper cups of tea outside.
