Last year, Peter went on his first post-lockdown family motorhome holiday. We were so pleased they had a great first experience (so much so that they’ve been on multiple since) and that they agreed to share their story with us, plus a bunch of beautiful holiday snaps!

So the first time I hired a motorhome was in August 2020 and it was due to the lockdown. So we went to visit my parents in Scotland and, at the time, the regulations didn’t allow us to stay in the house so we chose the motorhome as an option. And ever since then, we’ve fallen in love with the motorhome holidays.
They are big vehicles, but actually they’re quite easy to drive when you get into them. And you’ve got a lot of freedom, and it’s just great being on the road and having all the facilities and all the stuff with you.
This picture is the first night in the camper van, and we’re all super excited. It was a late evening and it’s probably a campsite which I’ll never forget. Just the first night ever in a motorhome.
My daughter absolutely loves it. We’ve been camping with her before, but going out in a motorhome is a completely different level. She likes being able to sleep on the bunk beds, and yeah, she just loves to put the bikes on, you can go cycling whenever you want. And then in the evenings, it’s quite nice to play board games. And actually, one of the games we took last year was a game that we had before the coronavirus, but it was actually called, “Pandemic.”
We went up to Fort William and there’s a really great picture, which I love, of my daughter standing in front of a completely still lake.
Going out in the motorhome has really allowed us to really appreciate the beauty of the country. As you’re driving along, you see a nice scenery, and you can actually pull over into a parking space and capture the moment at the time. And you can decide actually, “Maybe this is a good spot to have dinner or have lunch.” And you’ve got a fridge and a freezer in the motorhome, and some of the motorhomes have got ovens. Obviously you don’t want to do that every single night. You do want to have some nights off so you can have fish and chips, go and get a takeaway and eat them in the van.
We woke up one morning and we found that we had a nail in the tire, so we’d got a flat tire puncture. We phoned Matt at the Motorhome Holiday Company and within half an hour, he’d managed to arrange a mobile tire fitter to come out, and within two hours, we were on our way again.
Post pandemic, we’re going to continue doing this. We’ve been on four other motorhome holidays since, and we’ve got another two planned this year. It’s just a fantastic way to travel. It’s a really great way of having unplanned adventures.
