Northumberland Beaches

Best for wildlife: Blyth South

Blyth South is a long, wide, golden stretch of sandy beach, backed by a system of sand dunes which are a haven for wildlife and a designated area of Special Nature Conservation.

Best for dogs: Seahouses

The extensive area of gently sloping, sandy beach stretching north of the harbour is backed by low, grassy dunes and features a number of rocky outcrops. This can be a good destination for anyone who enjoys tranquillity and big open skies. The water quality here is good and the beach is used by birdwatchers and sea anglers as well as walkers. On clear days the Farne Islands can be seen in the distance.

Best for families: Bamburgh Castle beach

This is a perfect place to go for long, wind-swept walks at any time of year. The water temperatures don’t really get particularly warm even in the height of summer, but in the milder months of the year children enjoy playing in the waves and the sand is good for building sandcastles and playing beach games.

Best for history: Alnwick Castle

Dubbed the ‘Windsor of the North,’ Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country and has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for over 700 years.
Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle is one of the UK’s most significant heritage destinations and best days out in Northumberland.

Best for scenery: Dark Sky Park

Northumberland International Dark Sky Park – is the largest area of protected night sky in Europe. Nestled within this astronomical oasis is the magnificent Kielder Observatory, a public star-gazing facility like no other in the UK.
