Nottinghamshire Days out

Best for families: Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest

Delve into Robin Hood territory and discover the legend and magic of Sherwood Forest. There is always something to do on their active calendar, whether it’s a guided walk with the sheriff of Nottingham, a story of Robin Hood under the mighty oak, archery lessons or an evening glow worm walk. The forest has plenty of walking and cycling trails which can be located from the visitors centre, where you will also find a cafe and shop. In August is the yearly Robin Hood Festival, full of medieval family entertainment, including jousting, archery, sword fighting and incredible horseback stunts.

Best for rainy days: Nottingham Castle and Nottingham

Nottingham Castle ยฉ Tracey Whitefood and Nottingham Castle Trust and licensed under CC Licence.

Rebellion, riots and royal rows have all played out on Castle Rock, the jut of rock that Nottingham castle perches on. There are plenty of guided tours to take and a bursting calendar of events, with art exhibitions and galleries to explore and an exciting adventure playground for children.
Nottingham is a thriving and creative city with art galleries, a pedestrianised city centre and plenty of restaurants and cafes. Visit the Lace Market, the oldest area in Nottingham, which was the hub of the British Empire lace industry in England, now home to fashion boutiques and gastro pubs.

Best for history: Wollaton Hall

Wollaton Hall

A stunning Grade I Elizabethan Mansion with a traditional kitchen and the largest dedicated natural history museum in the country. It houses over 750,000 objects: from fascinating fossils to surreal โ€˜spiritโ€™ jars. Wollaston Hall has one of the oldest and last standing cast ironed framed glass houses. โ€˜The Camellia Houseโ€™ is situated in the formal gardens with a tranquil lake. The Hall is home to over 200 red and fallow deer. These herds have roamed the parkland since the 14th century. The Hall hosts many events from exhibitions to open air cinemas and theatre.

D.H Lawrenceโ€™s House

Caving

There is always plenty to do down on the farm whilst enjoying the fresh air family fun!

Eat this

Mushy peas and mint sauce

Peas ready to be mushed

A true Nottingham delicacy, theyโ€™re as big an attraction of the annual Goose Fair as the fairground rides. The good news is now you can get them all year round at Viccy centre market at the mushy pea stall.

Stichelton Cheese

The Cheese Shop ยฉ Visit Nottinghameshire licensed under CC Licence.

It looks like stilton, tastes like stilton (albeit a bit tangier and creamier) but because it is made with unpasteurised milk, it cannot be certified or named stilton. The only British cheese being made in this traditional way using raw milk is from a family run business set in Nottinghamshire. Find a local cheesemonger and grab some of this delicious locally made cheese.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

Ye olde trip to Jerusalem ยฉ Visit Nottinghameshire licensed under CC Licence.

This lovely old pub set in the cliffs below Nottingham Castle claims to have been established in 1189 and a well known pit stop for crusader knights. It has been said that King Richard the Lionheart and his men are more than likely to have gathered here before journeying to Jerusalem in 1189 AD. Full of cosy nooks and snug lounges this quirky pub is a cross between an inn and a museum.

A nice cup of tea

Enjoy an afternoon tea
