Devon Beaches
Best for best for scuba divers: Breakwater Beach, Brixham
Close to the mouth of Brixham harbour is Breakwater Beach, one of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay. Not only is it a Blue Flag beach, but it has a Seaside Award and has been recommended by the Good Beach Guide. There’s disabled access with adjoining parking facilities, meaning everyone can enjoy it.
Breakwater Beach is a particular favourite for scuba diving. There are a number of dive schools throughout the area and with some of the warmest and calmest waters in the country, this is the place to learn to scuba and get your open water certificate. Expect to see rare seagrass beds, seahorses, fish and even the odd shipwreck.
Best for families: Torre Abbey Sands, Torquay
Torquay has all the necessary ingredients for a traditional beach holiday for all the family. With its iconic palm trees, busy harbour, international marina, sandy beach and wonderful array of continental style cafes, restaurants and cocktail bars, the scene is set for the perfect Devon seaside holiday or short break.
Colourful beach huts sit in front of the clay cliffs and line the shingle beach.
Best for dogs: Broadsands Beach, between Paignton and Brixham
Broadsands Beach boasts soft sand, rock pools at either end and shallow waters, it is a great place for your dog to play during the winter months. Behind the beach is a long promenade and green parkland. On the other side of the beach, is a large seafront green that leads to Elberry Cove. These places are all dog-friendly too.

Best for an iconic destination: Babbacombe Cliff Railway
Take a delightful trip on the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, one of just a few working funicular railways in the UK. It was built in 1926 between the gaps in the 73m high cliffs: a fault line between the Devonian grey limestone and Permian red rocks.
Surrounded by some of the most breath-taking scenery to be found in the UK, the Cliff Railway provides a vital and non-exhausting way for locals and holiday makers alike to soak up the peaceful atmosphere and take in the amazing views as they travel to and from the water’s edge.
Best for families: Kents Cavern
Kents Cavern is one of Europe’s top and most exciting Stone Age caves, with an extensive labyrinth of spectacular and easily accessible caverns open daily all year. Our entertaining guides will take you on an underground adventure in this award-winning attraction and Stone Age home to Britain’s earliest humans and Ice Age beasts. Trips around the caves explore fascinating passageways and stunning chambers where you can get up close with thousands of year-old cave formations.
Best for historical exploration: Greenway
Greenway is a magical place to explore, with its rich historical interior and the wildness and mystery of its garden. Agatha Christie had her holiday home here and set two of her novels here, both of which feature on the Agatha Christie Literary Trail: Five Little Pigs and Dead Man’s Folly. Now managed by the National Trust, the property offers visitors an extraordinary glimpse into the private life of the Queen of Crime and her family.
