Best things to do on holiday in Cheshire

Venture for a holiday in Cheshire and you’ll discover lush and rural plains with green rolling hills and meadows, dotted with quaint and picturesque villages. On clear days you can look across the horizon as far as Snowdon, the Welsh mountain. Delamere Forest Camping and Caravan site, Delamere

A small and friendly certified Camping and Caravan rural campsite near Bristol with views across the Chew Valley to the Mendips. Roughly 9 miles from Bristol, it is within walking distance to Bristol airport where you will find bus links to the city.

Oakwood Farm, Chester

Knights Folly is a small independent site, listed with the Camping & Caravanning Club, situated on the edge of the village of Bitton between Bristol and Bath.The site has 20 pitches, both hard standing and grass, all with electric hook up. Overlooking the Avon Valley Steam Railway and Bristol/Bath cycle way, with easy access to both, it is ideal for both walkers and cyclists.

Best for families: Chester Zoo

With over 20,000 animals and 128 acres of Zoological gardens to explore, Chester Zoo is one of the largest in the UK. Get up close and personal by booking an animal experience day, offering a unique opportunity to discover more about the incredible animals and plants with the experts. For little monkeys in the family there is a treetop challenge, where you can watch them swing, climb and balance their way around the obstacles and zip lines.

Best for garden-lovers: Tatton Park

Set amidst more than 50 acres of Tatton Park Gardens, in the heart of 1,000 acres of landscaped parkland, lies an elegant 18th Century mansion with opulent state room and fascinating servants quarters. The impressive art collection includes a lost masterpiece by renaissance artist Francesco Salviati. Stroll the formal gardens to find a maze, a walled kitchen garden and a stunning 100 year old Japanese garden. Don’t forget to visit Tatton Park’s medieval Old Hall, featured on TVs ‘Most Haunted’.

Best for history: Chester

Not only does the ancient city of Chester have the most complete city walls, the oldest racecourse and the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, the city’s 1000 year old Cathedral also contains Europe’s finest example of medieval carvings. Walking the city walls provides wondrous views down into the city and a fantastic insight into Chester’s long history. Magnificent black and white buildings make up ‘The Rows’, continuous half-timbered galleries reached by steps, which form a second row of shops above those at street level on Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and Bridge Street. Discover specialist food shops, art galleries, gifts, jewellery, fashion and much more within the cobbled streets and quirky lanes.

Anderton Boat Lift

The mighty Anderton boat lift was designed to lift boats and barges 50ft from the River Weaver Navigation to the Trent & Mersey Canal and is still in full working order, this feat of Victorian engineering is nicknamed ‘Cathedral of the Canals’. Take a 30-minute boat ride up or down the lift to get the inside track on its workings. If you’ve got a head for heights, try Walking The Lift; venture out along the aqueduct to see the former control room and machine deck, then climb to the very top of this impressive structure for wonderful panoramic views. Little ones will love the new Let’s Play outdoor area, complete with a mock-up of Anderton’s bridge, control house and mooring area.

Built to house the factory workers of Lever’s ‘Sunlight Soap’ in 1888, this village has a fascinating museum, beautiful architecture, a world-class art gallery, stunning parkland and a thriving community. There are 900 grade II listed buildings set in 130 acres of what can only be described as beautifully-maintained parkland with a mature treescape. Add excellent public sculpture, one of the finest and largest war memorials in the UK and you have a truly amazing visit to look forward to.

BeWILDerwood is a huge, award winning forest of family fun and outdoor adventure. Treehouses, Wobbly Wires, Slippery Slopes, Crocklebogs, Twiggles and Boggles, storytelling, marsh walks appear here, all based on the magical and enchanting books by author and creator Tom Blofeld.

Walk to White Nancy

White Nancy is a 15ft-high landmark on the top of Kerridge Hill in Bollington, built in 1817 by John Gaskell junior of North End Farm, although it was originally constructed to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Waterloo some 165 miles to the south. Park in Bollington village and walk from Lord Street, following the footpath by the well at the junction of Cow Lane. Be prepared for a steep walk up.

Snugbury Ice Cream

This family business is run by three sisters continuing their parents’ passion, who started making ice cream in their kitchen in 1986. Now an award winning ice cream with a huge range of delicious flavours, they attract over 300,000 visitors to their pretty shop on their family farm. While enjoying one or two scoops of this delicious ice cream, why not take a wander through their field to see the amazing sculptures made from straw.

Cheshire Cheese

One of the Country’s oldest cheeses dating back to the Roman times, this irresistibly crumbly, creamy and salty delicacy was the most popular on the market in the late 18th century and just as sought after today. Head to the Cheese Shop on Northgate street in Chester to purchase some locally made Cheshire and then find a sunny bench in the grounds of the Cathedral to sit, eat and revel in the view.

The Forest Distillery

The Forest Distillery is a unique 17th century barn nestled 1,200ft above sea level within the beautiful Macclesfield Forest, in the Peak District National Park. This tiny distillery still forages in the forest for ingredients, uses pestle & mortars and distills with tiny pot stills, just as it did when it was first opened. Their beautiful ceramic bespoke bottles are made by Wade with stunning papercut design. An onsite bar is open every afternoon and tours are available at weekends. The Forest Distillery took over this pub in 2019 because of the extensive cellars – perfect for maturing their whiskey. Their whole whiskey distillery has moved here, making it Britain’s highest whiskey distillery at 1,689ft (515m) above sea level. This historic pub is the 2nd highest in Britain and has been operating since 1813.
