Best things to do on holiday in the Highlands

The Highlands really are the Scotland of your imagination. Think big skies, mind-blowing landscapes, superb food and hospitable people – and you’ve got the Scottish Highlands. There’s a natural playground that begs to be explored and the region’s turbulent history has left behind some of the most beautiful and romantic castles in the world.

The Highlands Days out

Best for Families: Loch Ness

Loch Ness is one of Scotlandโ€™s largest and most famous lochs, known around the world thanks to its elusive monster, Nessie.
Just a short distance from Inverness, this impressive stretch of water is 23 miles long and over 700 ft at its deepest, making it Scotlandโ€™s largest loch in terms of volume.

Best for Stargazing: Cairngorms National Park

The Glenlivet and Tomintoul area is one of the best places in the Cairngorms National Park to discover the wonders of the night sky. Not only does this remote area have stunning dark skies but it also has easy access allowing everyone to enjoy a night sky brimming with stars.

Best for Artists: Glasstorm, Highland town of Tain

Pay a visit to one of the UKโ€™s most exciting and cutting-edge hot glass studios in the attractive Highland town of Tain. After spending a decade working with some of the worldโ€™s leading glass designers and manufactures in Europe and the United States, Brodie Nairn and Nichola Burns decided to establish their studio and gallery here in 2005.

The Highlands Beaches

Best for watersports: Loch Morlich

Loch Morlich enjoys one of the finest settings of any loch in the country. It is surrounded by forests and fringed by beaches, with the stunning backdrop of the often snow-clad peaks of the northern Cairngorms.

Best for Dolphin watching: Chanonry Point, Rosemarkie

This narrow peninsula is an ideal location with views across the Moray Firth to Fort George and with lots of fellow dolphin watchers you are unlikely to miss any sightings.

Best for Dogs: Sango Bay, Durness

The sandy beach of Sango Bay is one of the most northerly beaches in mainland Scotland. It consists of a wide stretch of golden sand divided into three smaller coves by a series of rocky outcrops. Scattered along the beach are various rocks, stacks and skerries.

Eat This

Haggis

A famously Scottish dish, haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep’s pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked in a casing to retain the wonderful flavours.

Seafood at The Seafood Shack

Not often the obvious choice, but The Highlands are a great place to experience fresh and locally sourced seafood. Get fresh and local seafood cooked to order from a catering trailer in Ullapool at The Seafood Shack.

Drink This

Whisky

Scotland’s largest whisky region boasts a dizzying array of styles, from rich and textured to flagrant and floral. Fitting for an ever-changing landscape of coastline, moor and mountain.

Loch Achall Gin from Rhidorroch Distillery

Not just famous for Whisky, many new micro gin distilleries are also opening including Rhidorroch Distillery. Their Loch Achall gin is made with as many botanicals from Glen Achall as possible, with gorse flowers, rowan berries, heather and a little juniper from around the loch and its surrounding hills to make this amazing gin. You can catch them alongside the Seafood Shack this season.
